This nurse specialist provides clinical expertise to a specific population of patients across most clinical areas at Mercy Medical Center, with a focus on the adult and geriatric patient. This individual acts as a change agent for quality nursing standards, product evaluation and standardization, functioning in a self-directed, independent manner. In addition, the individual will serve as a mentor, consultant, educator, and role model in the areas of Wound, Ostomy and Continence nursing. This individual is a Registered Nurse, with a BSN and additional focused education/certification in the care of individuals with wounds, ostomies, pressure injuries and related skin problems. This individual will work as a team member, partnering with Wound, Ostomy Continence nurse manager, physicians, educators, therapists, and other staff nurses to provide comprehensive patient care. They must be able to work in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. They will assist with gathering and preparing pressure injury data reports and prevention plans for the hospital and will work with the department to ensure that Mercy Standards of care and practice are consistent with best practices. The Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurse preferably holds a certification in Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing.

Requirements:

  • Must possess: Bachelor’s degree
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing school in Nursing

Other education or work experience requirements

  • 2 years clinical experience in nursing
  • 2 years Medical Surgical nursing
  • 1 year Wound, Ostomy and Continence nursing/ and OR with strong working knowledge of wound and ostomy care
  • CPR Certification required, Healthcare Providers level

License Requirements:

  • RN License.
  • Must be licensed to practice in Maryland

Wound Ostomy and Continence certification requirements:

  • Preferred Certified Wound, Ostomy and Continence nurse (CWOCN)
  • Or, specialty certification (CWOCN) completion within 2 years of hire

Wound Ostomy and Continence certification requirements:

  • Able to learn within 6 months.

  • Must be able to work independently and possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Must possess the ability to effectively communicate and deal tactfully with other personnel, visitors, patients, physicians, customers, and the general public.
  • Must be flexible, have personal integrity, and the ability to function effectively as a team member
  • Must be able to follow written and oral instructions.

  • Flexible with work schedule to accommodate the educational and operational needs of the patient care units served and
  • Flexible to work in the inpatient and outpatient setting.
